Amber Alert issued for him has been canceled, Keith Squaire 17 months has been found safe

Pensacola, Florida (PNJ) -- A 17-month-old toddler kidnapped Tuesday night by his mother's ex-boyfriend is safe and unharmed in Brewton, Ala. today.

The boy was taken to the Brewton Police Department this morning, and the Amber Alert issued for him has been canceled.

The man responsible for taking him is still on the loose.

Pensacola Police Chief Chip Simmons and the boy's mother, Monique Slater held a news conference for 9:30 a.m. today at police headquarters. Though Simmons announced the boy's safe return, Slater decided not to speak to the Pensacola News Journal.

Here is how the abduction unfolded:

Sgt. Stephen Davis said Slater, 29, of Pensacola and her son were visiting some friends in the 1200 block of West Cervantes Street on Tuesday when the suspect, Keith Squaire Sr., showed up and asked to take the baby to see some friends.

Davis said the mother agreed. A short time later, Squaire, 36, address unavailable - called Salter and told her she'd never see the baby again. Davis said Squaire called Salter several times threatening to harm the baby and also said that he and the baby "would not be taken alive."

Salter called 911 about 9 p.m. and reported what had happened.

The call prompted a national Amber Alert. In addition to the Amber Alert being issued around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, law enforcement personnel from multiple jurisdictions began searching for the suspect and toddler.

The suspect and toddler were last seen walking on State Road 4 in Century on Tuesday. The car Squaire borrowed to come to visit the child was found late Tuesday in Brewton by the Brewton Police Department, but there were no signs of the suspect or the baby, Davis said.

Keith Squaire Sr. is about 5 feet 10, 235 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Davis said Squaire is not considered to be the toddler's father.
